For centuries, Russia has ensured that almost every generation of Ukrainians has known what loss feels like. Since 2014, it has done so on the battlefield, waging an utterly unprovoked and unjust war against Ukraine. Unjust, because the modern generation of Ukrainians is paying a very high price.
The history of the Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of Ukraine fallen in the struggle for independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine is one of the most painful chapters in our nation's history. 10 years ago, Russian forces, despite the agreement, shot down columns of Ukrainian soldiers as they passed through sunflower fields during their withdrawal from encirclement near Ilovaisk, Donetsk region.
The sunflower is also a symbol of Ukraine's resilience. Just as the black seeds of the sunflower will inevitably sprout, so will the Ukrainian nation continue to rise, no matter how many attempts are made to destroy it.
Today, not only sunflowers remind us of those horrific events, but also the hundreds of small flags on Independence Square in Kyiv, each symbolizing a warrior who was killed at the hands of Russia.
Sadly, Heroes die. However, their memory and legacy must live on forever. That is why today, as every day at 9 a.m., we honor those who fell for the independent and free future of our country.
Eternal memory and glory to the Heroes!
